Incorporating one-way substitution policy into the newsboy problem with imprecise customer demand

چکیده
This paper presents an approach for solving an inventory model for single-period products with maximizing its expected profit in a fuzzy environment, in which the retailer has the opportunity for substitution. Though various structures of substitution arise in real life, in this study we consider the fuzzy model for two-item with one-way substitution policy. This one-way substitutability is reasonable when the products can be stored according to certain attribute levels such as quality, brand or package size. Again, to describe uncertainty usually probability density functions are being used. However, there are many situations in real world that utilize knowledge-based information to describe the uncertainty. The objective of this study is to provide an analysis of single-period inventory model in a fuzzy environment that enables us to compute the expected resultant profit under substitution. An efficient numerical search procedure is provided to identify the optimal order quantities, in which the utilization of imprecise demand and the use of one-way substitution policy increase the average expected profit. The benefit of product substitution is illustrated through numerical example. 2008 Published by Elsevier B.V.

A Study on Linking Upward Substitution and Fuzzy Demands in the Newsboy-Type Problem
This paper investigates the effect of product substitution in the single-period ‘newsboy-type’ problem in a fuzzy environment. It is supposed that the single-period problem operates under uncertainty in customer demand, which is described by imprecise terms and modelled by fuzzy sets. To perform this analysis, we consider the fuzzy model for two-item with upward substitution. This upward substi...
متن کاملOptimal flexible capacity in newsboy problem under stochastic demand and lead-time
In this paper, we consider a newsvendor who is going to invest on dedicated or flexible capacity, our goal is to find the optimal investment policy to maximize total profit while the newsvendor faces uncertainty in lead time and demand simultaneously. As highlighted in literature, demand is stochastic, while lead time is constant. However, in reality lead time uncertainty decreases newsvendor's...
متن کاملPrice Discount and Stochastic Initial Inventory in the Newsboy Problem
Many extension of the newsboy problem have been solved in the literature. One of those extensions solves a newsboy problem with stochastic initial inventory, earlier extensions have focused on quantity discounts offered by suppliers. An important practical extension would address a combination of the two pervious extensions. In this paper we consider a newsboy problem in which the suppliers off...
متن کاملAn analysis of insurance in the newsboy problem
In this paper we study the standard newsboy problem, but under two new assumptions when compared to the existing literature. First, we assume that the wholesaler sets the wholesale price optimally, and in doing so, takes into account the salvage value at which the newsboy can return unsold items to the wholesaler. Second, we assume that the salvage value is a choice variable of the newsboy, and...
متن کاملIncorporating Wind Power Generation And Demand Response into Security-Constrained Unit Commitment
Wind generation with an uncertain nature poses many challenges in grid integration and secure operation of power system. One of these operation problems is the unit commitment. Demand Response (DR) can be defined as the changes in electric usage by end-use customers from their normal consumption patterns in response to the changes in the price of electricity over time. Further, DR can be also d...
